The Arctic Bar, which was acquired by Gordon & Marjory Bruce in April 1990, is situated just off the High Street in New Inn Entry. One of the oldest pubs in Dundee the Arctic Bar is convenient for all city centre shops, Caird Hall, Discovery Point, Museum and all public transport facilities. The Arctic Bar is a family run business with Gordon, Marjory, son Raymond and daughter Kirstyn all involved one way or another. The name of the Establishment is believed to have originated from the fact that whalers used to collect their wages from the bar. A main feature of the pub is a centre-piece in the floor of the old bar depicting a polar bear on top of an iceberg. Six doors in the bar area have coffin shaped windows (see pictures below) and the story passed down through the years was that they were fitted to commemorate six local whalers lost at sea. New Inn Entry is one of the oldest thoroughfares in Dundee and until Reform Street was opened it remained the principal street leading northward from the High Street. New Inn Entry is also a main access to Dundee's busy Keiller Centre and many shoppers like to stop off at the Arctic for a meal and refreshments. The Arctic Bar has an excellent reputation for its freshly made food and use only fresh meat and vegetables from reputable local suppliers. The establishment provides value for money lunches, evening meals, hot and cold snacks. These are served Monday to Friday 11.30 a.m. - 6.00 p.m. - Saturday 11.00 a.m. - 7.00 p.m. The extensive menu offers large family meals and, also available for old aged pensioners is special three course lunches for £3.50 that include a choice of five starters, any main course and five choices of sweet. This spacious establishment comprises of bar, small lounge, function suite with dance floor and can cater for between 90 and 100 people. Entertainment such as live bands and karaoke are provided for dancing the night away Thursday - Saturday. In the summer there is a pavement cafe area to the rear of the pub, weather permitting April - October. The Arctic is a very popular meeting place for Dundonians and you will always get a warm welcome. |
